14) Indigenous religions: There are many indigenous religions around the world. Indigenous religions are diverse, localized spiritual traditions native to specific landscapes, deeply connecting communities to nature and ancestors through oral practices. Centered on animism, ritual, and shared ancestry, these faiths, including African, Indigenous American, and Australian Aboriginal traditions, prioritize harmony with the environment and are often passed down through generations. Belief that all elements of nature, such as animals and plants, possess an inherent spirit, leading to a deep, sacred relationship with the land. Recognition of spirits of place, ancestors, and, in some cases, shapeshifters or tricksters. Teachings, myths, and rituals are shared through storytelling and community gatherings rather than sacred texts. Approximately 350 400 million worldwide.

Major World Religions

• Christianity - 2.6 billion (all denominations), Founder Jesus Christ in 30 AD, the Anointed One of Israel. Offers forgiveness and love to all. In all nations. Holy book: the Bible. One divine Creator of the Universe. God is Love and Just. See denominations page

• Islam - 2 Billion (Sunni, Shiite, and others; Middle East, Africa, and Asia). Founder: Prophet Muhammad in 610 AD; one god Allah; demand for submission or death. Holly Book Qur'an. Creator on a seat over water.

• Hindu - 1.2 Billion (India). Founded before 1500 BC. Many gods; also, everything is god. Reincarnation: humans and animals are reborn and reborn. The best is reincarnation into a sacred cow. Karma: bad things that happen to you are always your fault (not cause and effect). Caste system: poor must stay poor to work off Karma. This leads to a lack of compassion in Hinduism. The universe came from god's sweat.

• Chinese Folk Religions - 0.4 Billion. Many gods. It blends shamanism with Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism to honor nature, gods, and ancestors. Universe is from a Cosmic Egg.

• Buddhism - 0.5 Billion (East and Southeast Asia). Buddha grew up a Hindu. He did not like the caste system; his teachings are Reincarnation, Karma, ethical living, honoring ancestors, and a Hindu creation story. The universe came from god's sweat.

• Judaism - 16 million (low due to 6 million killed in the 1940s holocaust, and loss of their descendants) (half in USA and Israel) Founder: Abraham and Moses; one God. Holy Book: Hebrew BIble - Tanakh. One divine Creator of the Universe.
