Astronomy - Cosmology
Since the beginning of mankind, humans have studied the heavenly bodies in the night sky. Without today's light pollution, ancient stargazers had a vivid, crystal-clear view of the Milky Way and planetary movements. Ancient structures like Stonehenge and Nabta Playa were built to align with solstices and specific sun risings. Mesopotamian and Babylonian astronomers documented celestial phenomena on clay tablets for centuries, tracking planetary paths and predicting eclipses. Ancient Egyptian astronomy combined careful tracking of the sun, stars, and seasons. The practical side of ancient astronomy served as an essential survival tool for early civilizations, providing vital guidance for agriculture, timekeeping, navigation, and architecture. Yet in the area of Cosmology, that is, the study of the nature of the universe, the universe's origin and history, the ancients made the heavenly bodies their gods or placed their gods in the night sky or the sun.
The Bible stands alone as the only Holy Book or ancient writing that correctly states that the heavenly bodies are created objects. In fact, the Bible has a number of passages on cosmology. Modern cosmology and astronomy confirm these Bible passages. Remember, the Bible was written from 2,000 to 3,500 years ago! It got it all correct!
1) Genesis 1:1 refers to the cosmic creation event, which was called The Singularity and is now called the Big Bang by science. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (meaning the universe, as Biblical Hebrew has no word for universe, so this phrase is used) “. So, the first statement is that God created all things: all matter, energy, all stars, galaxies, the solar system, everything. Also called First Law of Thermodynamics
2) Titus 1:2, and 2 Timothy 1:9 state that the time of the universe, our time, had a beginning, and thus was created. The Space-time theorem has proven this to be correct. (The Bible shows that God predated the universe and was actively involved in causing certain effects before the existence of the universe is found in Colossians 1, Proverbs 8:22-31; John 17:24; Ephesians 1:4; 2 Timothy 1:9; Titus 1:2; and 1 Peter 1:20.)
3) The Bible correctly states that the universe came from that which we cannot detect. Hebrews 11:3 states it explicitly: “The universe was framed by God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” Called ex nihilo. This has been confirmed by the Space-time theorem. John 1:3 "All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." Colossians 1:16-1 "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible".
3) The universe has been expanding since its creation. See verses: Job 9:8; Psalm 104:2; Isaiah 40:22; 42:5; 44:24; 45:12; 48:13; 51:13; Jeremiah 10:12; 51:15; and Zechariah 12:1. These five different Bible authors all stated that the "stretched out" of the "heavens" or "skies" meaning outer space, is ongoing. Job 9:8; Isaiah 44:24; and 45:12 state that God alone is responsible for the cosmic stretching. Isaiah 42:5: ""This is what God the Lord says— the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it." The Hebrew verb translated “created” in Isaiah 42:5 is bara’ which has as its primary definition “bringing into existence something new, something that did not exist before.
4) The Bible correctly states that decay is a major part of the universe from its creation. Romans 8:21 we are told that the entire creation has been subjected to the law of decay (the second law of thermodynamics). Also called the Secand of Thermodynamics
5) The Bible correctly states the laws of physics, and constants of physics do not change. Jeremiah 33:25, God declares, “I have established…the fixed laws of heaven and earth.” This is just one of several Scripture passages demonstrating that for thousands of years the Bible has been on record as stating that the laws of physics do not vary. In astronomy it takes time for light to travel from the stars, galaxies, and quasars to telescopes. Simply by observing galaxies and quasars at varying distances researchers can directly measure the values of several fundamental constants of physics at distant times in the past history of the universe. The speed of light in a outer space is exactly 299,792,458 meters per second (about 186,282 miles per second). Traveling at the speed of light, it takes between 33 and 54 minutes to reach Jupiter from Earth. It takes light 4.25 years to travel from Earth to Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our solar system. With space telescopes, we can see back. With powerful space telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope, we can look back in time 13.4 billion years, capturing light from some of the very first galaxies. Over this time, 4 to 13 billion years, light and star burning are the same, laws of physics, are the same in the past. The fine-tuning arises because any small changes to these laws of physics values lead to a lifeless universe. See Law of physics page
6) The Bible correctly states that the universe and earth are not eternal and will have an ending. We now know that the universe is using up all it fuel and will pass away and end. Not just the universe, but earth will end before the universe. 2 Corinthians 4:18 "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Peter 3:10 "10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies[a] will be burned up and dissolved" Revelation 21:1: "Then I saw 'a new heaven and a new earth,' for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.
7) The universe was designed for the benefit of humanity. Science calls this the Anthropic Principle. Astronomy provides many illustrations of this idea. New discoveries continue to reveal that the features of our planet and solar system, and even the very laws of physics themselves, demonstrate fine-tuning on all scales from atoms to the universe. See Anthropic Principle page Only the Bible predicts and explains the anthropic principle. Isaiah 45:18 "For this is what the Lord says— he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited. Psalm 115: "The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to mankind. "
8) Pleiades are Bound by Gravity. Job 38:31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? The Pleiades is an open star cluster. Modern astronomy has revealed that these stars are actually gravitationally bound to one another. They share a common origin, travel through space together as a unit, and are held tightly by their mutual gravitational attraction—literally locked in cosmic "chains".
9) The stars are not gods, and should not be worshiped. Deuteronomy 4:19 "And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them". (Also Deuteronomy 17:3)
10) The stars and planets do not control anyone's lives. So do not use them. Jeremiah 10:2 "This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them." (Astrology as a form of divination is expressly forbidden in Scripture)
11) The stars are good for Timekeeping and His Glory. From old, the stars helped people know when to plant and harvest, as a good use of the stars. Gen 1:14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years". Note it says "Let there be" not create. The sun was created on day 1 at Gen 1:1, but at this time, as the Book of Job 28:9 states, the dark clouds over the earth changed, and now the sun, moon, and stars can be seen. Psalm 19:1-4:
12) There are more stars than one can see with the naked eye. This is true. The Bible repeatedly compares the stars in the sky to sand on the seashore as an idiomatic expression or hyperbole to describe an uncountable, immense quantity rather than an exact mathematical equivalence. But, today we guess the observable universe contains an estimated one septillion stars (a 1 followed by 24 zeros, or 10²⁴). There are an estimated up to a sextillion grains of sand on all the beaches.
13) We have just the correct number of stars for life to be here on earth. The universe is finely tuned with breathtaking precision for life to be possible here on Earth. The fine-tuning of the cosmic expansion rate is controlled by the universe's mass. Take away just one small star (a little mass), and life becomes impossible anywhere in the universe at any time. As, the expansion rate would be wrong to make the elements needed for life. Psalm 147:4 "He (God) determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name" Psalm 8:3 "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place." Psalm 136:7 "To him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever". Genesis 1:31 "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good."
14) The Earth is held up by nothing. Job 26:7 "He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing." Bible describes God holding the planet in space without any visible pillars or physical support.
15) Every star is different because of variations in mass, temperature, elements, and age. Bible states that every star being different from one another is 1 Corinthians 15:41.
16) The air (atmosphere) has weight. Job 28:25: "When He imparted weight to the wind, And assessed the waters by measure," written in 3,500 BC. Science first scientifically proved that air has weight and exerts pressure in 1643.
17) The Water Cycle: Ecclesiastes 1:7 describes how streams flow into the sea yet the sea is never full, and water returns to the places from which it flows, reflecting the natural hydrological cycle. Written 935 BC Also Job 36:27-28 “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams; the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.” Written about 1,500 BC The modern scientific understanding of the water cycle was discovered and proven in 1674.
18) The Bible accurately describes the ocean currents & atmospheric jet streams. -Ecclesiastes 1:6-7 “The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.” Psalm 8:8 “…the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.”
19) The Bible accurately describes the details of the depths of the ocean as having underwater springs and mountains. Job 38:16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?” Jonah 2:5-6 “The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever.”
It is no wonder the Bible declares:
Psalm 19:1-4: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."
Romans 1:20: " For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
Star of Bethlehem
There is debate as to what the Star of Bethlehem was (a star used to guide the wise men from the east). Ideas:
1) A supernatural light God provided.
2) A supernova star. A massive and powerful star explosion that marks the violent end of a star's life. Can briefly outshine an entire galaxy. Astronomers have discovered evidence of stars that can undergo a pair of explosive blasts. (Ancient Chinese and Korean stargazers recorded a supernova at this time.)
3) Planet alignment. Jupiter and Saturn or Venus and Jupiter. But these are not special enough.
4) A Comet.

A gas planet, or Gas Giant, is a massive planet composed mostly of hydrogen and helium in a frozen state that lacks a traditional solid surface. Its surface is like a slushy. Like Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.
Dwarf planet is a solar system body that orbits the Sun and has a nearly round shape, but has not cleared its orbital path of other debris. Our solar system officially recognizes five dwarf planets. Pluto was once a planet, but it was reclassified as a dwarf planet after astronomers discovered other planets.

Asteroid belt is a ring of many rocks in our solar system located between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter.
Oort Cloud is a giant, spherical shell of icy space debris that surrounds our solar system past Pluto.

Black Holes: Regions of space with gravity so strong that not even light can escape.
Constellation is an area viewed from Earth in which a group of visible stars forms a perceived pattern or outline, typically representing an animal, mythological subject, or inanimate object. Such as Orion, Leo, or Scorpius. In contemporary astronomy, the International Astronomical Union recognizes 88 constellations.
Red dwarf star (M-type) is the smallest, coolest, very unstable and most common type of star in the universe. Red dwarfs experience intense magnetic instability that causes violent flares that blow away any planet's atmosphere. Life is not possible in a red dwarf system.
White Dwarfs: (Class D) Dense, fading remnants left behind after medium-sized stars exhaust their fuel. Life is not possible here.
Giants and Supergiants: Massive stars that have expanded and brightened after running out of core hydrogen. Too unstable for life.
Neutron star is the super-dense collapsed core of a massive giant star. Stars with an initial mass about 8 to 25 times larger than our Sun run out of nuclear fuel at the end of their lives. Gravity squeezes protons and electrons together until they form neutrons, leaving behind a tiny, ultra-dense remnant. They are so dense that a single teaspoon of neutron star material would weigh billions of tons on Earth. Many spin rapidly, sometimes hundreds of times per second, shooting beams of radiation from their magnetic poles like a cosmic lighthouse (known as pulsars).
Supernova is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star that temporarily outshines an entire galaxy. Massive stars (at least 8 times the mass of the Sun) when their iron cores collapse under gravity and rebound in a massive blast. This leaves behind a neutron star or black hole. They spread heavy elements like iron, carbon, and nickel across the universe, needed for life. They scatter elements that form the building blocks for new stars, planets, and life.
Atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding a planet held in place by gravity. Earth has a thin atmosphere now; it was thicker in the past. Venus as very think atmosphere. The noon and Mercury have no atmosphere. Mars has a very thin atmosphere, like 100,000 feet on Earth.
Binary star system is a pair of stars that are bound together by gravity and orbit around a shared center of mass. 85%) stars are in a Binary star system or three stars. Life is not possible in these systems, as gravity is too unstable.
Single stars, like our Sun are only 15% of the stars.
Spiral galaxy is a giant, spinning group of stars, gas, and dust that looks like a pinwheel with curved arms from space. Spiral Arms: Swirling bands that stretch out from the center where new, hot stars are born. Life is only possible is spiral galaxy. But not all spiral galaxies are the same, spiral galaxy must have stable spiral arms. Only the Milky Way galaxy has stable spiral arms.
Central Bulge of a galaxy: A bright, crowded middle part filled with older, dimmer stars and a ussaly a black hole.
Andromeda Galaxy is the closest large spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way, located about 2.5 million light-years away. Like all other spiral galaxies, it does not have stable spiral arms.
Outer space, or simply space, is the expanse that exists beyond Earth's atmosphere and between celestial bodies (Stars). It contains ultra-low levels of particle densities, constituting a near-perfect vacuum with a little hydrogen and helium plasma, permeated by electromagnetic radiation, cosmic rays, neutrinos, magnetic fields and dust.
Interstellar medium (ISM) is the matter and radiation that exists in the space between the star systems in a galaxy. This matter includes gas in ionic, atomic, and molecular form, as well as dust and cosmic rays.
Nebula consist of hydrogen and cosmic dust. Nebulae are often star-forming regions, such as the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula. In these Nebulae, the formations of gas, dust, and other materials "clump" together to form denser regions, which attract further matter and eventually become dense enough to form stars.
Solar corona is the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere. It is a region filled with relatively hot, tenuous plasma that is structured by the solar magnetic field.
Solar flare is a giant explosion on the Sun that sends massive bursts of electromagnetic radiation and high-speed particles into space.
Solar wind is a stream of charged particles released from the Sun's outermost atmospheric layer, the corona. This plasma mostly consists of electrons, protons and alpha particles: deadly radiation.
Earth's magnetic field, or geomagnetic field, is an invisible, protective force that extends from our planet's interior out into space. It protects Earth and its life from the sun's deadly radiation. It also makes compasses work. Mars and Venus have no geomagnetic field, so they have no chance for life.
Main-Sequence: Stars actively fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores, making up about 90% of the universe's star population.
Stellar classification:
Blue stars (O-type) with temperatures above 30,000 K; they are massive, rare, and short-lived. (W and WR class subtype) (0.00003% of stars) Too unstable for life.
Blue-white stars (B-type) with temperatures between 10,000–30,000 K. 0.12% of stars. Too unstable for life.
White stars (A-type: ) with temperatures between 7,500–10,000 K (e.g., Sirius). 0.61% of stars. Too unstable for life.
Yellow-white stars (F-type) with temperatures between 6,000–7,500 K. 3.0% of stars. Too unstable for life.

Red giant stars make up roughly 0.6% of stars. Too unstable for life.
Red supergiant stars make up an extremely tiny fraction of stars about 0.00001% of all stars. Too unstable for life.
Brown Dwarf stars (T-type, Y-type and L-type) make up roughly 10% of stars. Redder than an M-type star. Too unstable for life.
C-Class star also known as carbon stars. These are red giants, near the end of their lives, in which there is an excess of carbon in the atmosphere. 0.001% or less of stars. No life.
S-Class Star are between class M stars and carbon stars. 0.0001% or less of stars. No life.
