Why So Much Decay?
The second law of thermodynamics is also called entropy and decay. Heat will flow from hot to cold. Disorder and randomness will always increase in a closed system. Thus the universe is getting cold and will, in the far future, have a “heat death”. (Second law of thermodynamicsn wa founded in about 1850). Entropy-Decay is what makes engines work and enables your body to obtain energy from food.
Decay is integral to creation. Decay is a physical necessity. Decay is not so high as to discourage work. Decay is not so low as not to punish sin. Decay is optimal for restraining evil. Decay is optimal to prepare for New Creation.
Decay will, in the future: Cause a reduction in the visibility of the universe; The end of star burning; End of all metabolism; End of consciousness - a secular view; End of meaning - secular view.
The Bible, thousands of years ago, correctly stated the universe is in a state of decay!
Romans 8:20-22 (57 CE [AD]) "For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. "
The Bible correcly state that we are like the universe, also decaying:
2 Corinthians 4:16-17 "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all."
The Bible correctly states that the universe will end.
2 Peter 3:10-12"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat."
(Note: The Ekpyrotic universe model predicts that the universe could experience a fiery demise.)
Mark 13:31: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."
But We Can have Hope - New Creation
Bible correctly states the origins of the universe (see Space-Time page). Thus, the Bible gives us hope in stating that the universe is NOT all that there is. A decaying universe is a pathway to a new creation. (John 3:16). Revelation 21:1b: Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away”.
God made this universe for the conquest of evil. While free will and evil are present in this universe, God has provided a way to enter a new creation, which will have no evil or suffering. A critical distinction of the Biblical creation account compared to other creation scenarios is the promise of a new creation that will someday replace this present creation. This new creation goes beyond paradise restored. It is a radically and gloriously different creation governed by different laws and framed by different dimensions. Also with NO decy. No matter how good you think the new creation will be, it will be better!
Decay and universe provided the physical and historical context for God the Son to take human form and accomplish the reconciliation of man to God.
John 1:14: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
