Unification Church

Unification Church is one of the best cults at disguising its unusual, non-traditional beliefs from the unsuspecting secular world. This was not always the case, as history testifies regarding the "brainwashing" scare that seemed to follow Unification proselytising efforts everywhere during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Much like the Mormons in the century before them, however, the Unification leadership rose above the turmoil and began to project a public persona that intrigued many secularists as well as unsuspecting religious leaders—even evangelical Christian leaders. Today, just as the Mormons are more well known for their social welfare programs, family values, and wholesome lifestyles than for their belief in many gods and that you can become a god of your own planet; so the Unification members ("Moonies") are better known for their support of conservative values than for their belief that Moon is the new Messiah sent to propagate the perfect family on earth. The reputation of the Unification-owned Washington Times is reaching the value in the public square. The Unification Church is a fascinating study of how a religious movement can move from everybody’s bogeyman to a respected public voice of conservatism in two short decades. Underneath the public veneer, however, Unificationism is no more biblical or Christian than Mormonism or Christian Science.

The Unification Church officially called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, is a South Korean-based new religious movement founded by Sun Myung Moon in 1954. Known for its mass weddings, the church teaches a combination of Christianity and Confucian values, with followers believing Moon and his wife, Hak Ja Han, are the "True Parents" and messiah.

Founder: Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012) claimed he was chosen by Jesus to finish the work of creating an "ideal family" and restoring humanity.

Theological Text: Its doctrines are based on the Exposition of Divine Principle book.

"Blessing" Ceremonies: The church is famous for mass wedding ceremonies where thousands of couples are matched and married simultaneously, often across borders.

Followers: Followers were often termed "Moonies"

Jesus in the Unification Church is as a divine messiah who failed to complete his mission of establishing a sinless family on Earth due to his crucifixion. While acknowledging his spiritual role, they believe he did not achieve physical salvation, necessitating a Second Coming—identified as founder Sun Myung Moon—to finish this work.

Salvation in the Unification Church as the restoration of humanity from a state of sin—stemming from a sinful, satanic lineage—back into a sinless lineage directly connected to God. This is primarily achieved through the "Blessing," a mass wedding ceremony that removes original sin, aiming for a "True Family" and a perfected world.

Political Influence: The church, often known for its strict anti-communist stance, has built, and sometimes lost, relationships with conservative political leaders worldwide, notably in Japan and South Korea.

Business Empire: The church owns numerous business and media ventures, including the Washington Times newspaper.

While global, its active following in the West is relatively small, with estimates in the U.S. under ten thousand

Current Status: After the 2022 assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe—which brought intense scrutiny to the group's ties to politicians—the group has faced severe legal pressures. In March 2026, the Tokyo High Court upheld a 2025 decision. The movement has been heavily criticized and labeled a cult for its coercive fundraising methods, intense recruitment techniques, and high-pressure indoctrination, particularly between the 1970s and 1990s.

Unification theology is a homogenisation of dualism, using Taoist philosophy. The church publishes a number of books to explain this concept, but the most authoritative is Divine Principle. Although the Bible is considered a scripture, it is essentially replaced by Moon’s Divine Principle. There is no question that Moon distrusts the text of God’s Word. He taught, "The Bible, however, is not the truth itself, but contains the truth.

God is described in dualistic characteristics by Moon. God’s internal essence is both male and female, positive and negative (yang and yin). God’s external relationship is subject and object, male and female (yang and yin).

The god whom Moon portrays is weak, needful, and without all power. Moon speaks of God as one who is destructible. He says, "Since God must live in everything that is created, God himself must have these two separate elements [Sung Sang and Hyung Sang]. God must have the same nature as the rest of His creation, for without having such characteristics, He would eventually be destroyed by trying to exist in such a world.
