The Human Mind - Soul - Brian
The human mind remains one of the least understood concepts in science. That said, many new studies have shown, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the human brain-mind is more than just biological tissue. These studies confirm what the Bible has declared for 3,500 years: that humans are different from animals not just in kind, but to a vast degree. The Bible states that we are made in the "Image of God." The image of God (imago Dei in Latin) is a biblical teaching that human beings are uniquely created to resemble and represent God, that we have a body (flesh and bones), a soul (personality, will, and emotions), and spirit (a connection to God that is not physical. This means humans possess unique value, worth, and sacred status that sets them apart from the rest of creation. Humans reflect God's attributes in three main ways: Mentally: Through reason, choice, and creativity. Morally: Through a capacity for love, justice, righteousness, and holiness. Socially: Through relationships and community with one another and God. The spirit (soul) of a human cannot die or end, as it is not physical. Let's look at the science that proves these points:
The brain is a physical organ made of tissue and cells, while the mind (soul) is the non-physical process of consciousness, thought, and subjective experience that operates through it. The Brain: A tangible three-pound mass of about 100 billion neurons, blood vessels, and synapses that you can touch, weigh, and measure. Many cognitive scientists compare the brain to computer hardware and the mind to software. The software runs on the hardware, but the program itself is a functional process, not a microchip. Scientists note the mind is not strictly trapped inside the cranial bone. The brain is a tangible mass of tissue, blood vessels, and neurons that you can touch. The mind is intangible, representing thoughts, feelings, spiritual life, and awareness that you cannot physically touch.
1) Human Uniqueness. Only are able to invent and manipulate symbols, using signs, to represent ideas, objects, and emotions. To invent and manipulate symbols (using signs, to represent ideas, objects, and emotions. To engage in mathematics, literature, music, art, philosophy, and theology. Have ability to tame, domesticate, and train animals. To hve Self-conscious - conscious and moral dilemma. Able to do very good (altruizm) and vast evil, unlike animals. See Human Uniqueness page
2) Meditation and prayer physically reshapes the brain via neuroplasticity, strengthening regions associated with attention, emotion regulation, and self-awareness while shrinking the fear-driven amygdala. ref link
3) The human brain possesses a specialized, bilateral network for high-level mathematics—specifically in the prefrontal, parietal, and inferior temporal regions—that is distinct from language processing, as shown in studies found in (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and ScienceDirect.com. This "math-specific" network, which includes the intraparietal sulcus, activates for algebra, analysis, geometry, and topology, regardless of whether the person is a professional mathematician. Animals do not have this specialized place. Humans have carried this place in the brain for thousands of years, before mathematics was invented.
4) Near-Death Experience is a personal experience that occurs during clinical death. The number of Near-Death Experience accounts has increased with the advancement in modern medicine. Each day more and more individuals are brought to life from clinical death. While each account has some differences, there are many similar experiences. Individuals recount detachment from their body, a deep feeling of peace and love, moving through a tunnel, and encountering light. Research has shown that after a Near-Death Experience, many often have permanent, positive, and transformative life changes. such as reduced fear of death, increased compassion, and a shift away from materialism to faith in God and an afterlife. Even some atheists have had life-changing (come to Christ) experiences. See Near-Death Experience page
5) The Brain is special. Doctors perform a corpus callosotomy as a rare treatment for severe, drug-resistant epilepsy to stop seizures from spreading from one side of the brain to the other. In corpus callosotomy, doctors cut all the nerve connections (200 million nerve fibers) between the two halves of the brain. Studies show that the two halves can still communicate. This dense bundle of over 200 million nerve fibers normally allows the left and right hemispheres to share sensory, motor, and cognitive information within milliseconds. Even without this connection, the brain can still communicate! Dr. Michael Egnor (Stony Brook University neurosurgeon, over 7,000 operations), as done many studies and test to show this to be true. He also found that some people with parts of their brain missing or removed are still functional. Egnor youtube video 1. Video 2 ref link
6) About 1/3 of the brain hardware is wired to motor skills, speech, hearing, and other sensors. But about 2/3 of the mind is not hard-wired to motor, speech, or other hardware. A large part of the non-hard-wired brain can be removed, and a person can still function normally.
7) Terminal lucidity is an unexpected return of mental clarity, memory, and energy shortly before death in people who were previously unresponsive, confused, or suffering from severe neurological conditions. Sometimes also called an "end-of-life rally" or "the surge," this rare phenomenon can occur in patients with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, strokes, or other terminal illnesses. The brain hardware is gone or very damaged, yet the person returns. Clear communication: A person who has been nonverbal for months may suddenly speak clearly and recognize loved ones. The individual might ask for food or water, sit up, or show enthusiasm. Patients often recall past events, share names, or express final thoughts. It usually happens in the final days or hours of life, followed by a rapid decline and death. Scientists do not understand why it happens, as it is not physical (the brain has not been working for some time). This is 100% proof of the difference between the brain and mind-soul.
8) Studies show that even those who are in a deep coma, or have massive damage, can still hear and think. Doctors often tell families to always assume that the Patients in a coma can hear. Some who come out tell of coma memories. MRI of some in a coma has shown that parts of the mind light up with some stimulation.
9) Pastors and chaplains who spend years at the bedside of the dying frequently share profound observations about what truly matters at the end of life. Dying individuals rarely ask or talk about their awards, money, or career achievements. Instead, they want to hold hands, express forgiveness, and be surrounded by loved ones. Ministers observe that people often reflect deeply on their spiritual lives, seeking reconciliation with God or family before they pass. The dying individuals often speak of seeing deceased relatives, light, or spiritual figures like angels just before passing. At death, experiences are seeing “God’s reality” in an “extra-dimensional” way; the similarities in these experiences — happenings he believes back the biblical narrative and provide proof to non-believers.
10) Materialist worldview: those who believe humans are just physical sometimes think that there is no human "free will", as humans only react to outside stimuli and our upbringing. Science has shown this view is not correct, and materialists do not even live their lives in this mindset. Humans have free will, which involves non-physical choices and decisions. Part if this is the human conscience which is an inner sense of right and wrong that guides a person's thoughts, motives, and actions.
11) Wilder Penfield, an American-Canadian neurosurgeon, whose extensive work on neuroscience and the brain gives very strong proof of the difference between the hardware of the brain and the mind-soul. After performing over a thousand open-brain surgeries on conscious epilepsy patients using the "Montreal Procedure," he concluded that the physical brain operates like a computer ("hardware") that is programmed by an independent mind or soul ("software"). hen Penfield electrically stimulated a patient’s motor cortex, it caused their arm to move or their vocal cords to make a sound involuntarily. However, the patients always recognized that they did not choose to make the movement. They would say, "I didn't do that. You did." Penfield realized that while he could artificially stimulate physical responses, he could never manipulate or replicate a patient's personal sense of will or agency. Penfield observed hundreds of thousands of epileptic seizures, which are massive, spontaneous electrical discharges across the brain. While these physical storms could cause involuntary movements, trigger intense emotions, or evoke vivid sensory flashbacks, they never triggered abstract philosophical reasoning, logic, or mathematical thought. He noted the complete absence of what he called "mind seizures," suggesting that the hardware of the brain is not capable of generating abstract intellect on its own. Across millions of stimulations, he could never mechanically trigger a thought process, a concept, or belief. Penfield’s work remains a major cornerstone in arguments for the mind-soul.
